at St. Joseph School

Second Grade is a time for each student to develop independence and responsibility for class, work, homework and behavior. We prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist through ongoing lessons and practice. Second graders develop math skills to include 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. They continue to develop fluency and expression in reading while learning new vocabulary and comprehension strategies. Our writing follows our reading series and includes assignments to retell the stories, non-fiction writing with strategies to incorporate facts into writing, and poetry writing. The students develop an awareness and curiosity of the world around us through observations and activities in science.

We are incorporating Guided Reading this year to ensure each child is reaching his/her potential. The Guided Reading groups will help to enhance reading comprehension, fluency and other reading strategies that engage young readers and make them active readers and writers. We are fortunate in second grade to have Mrs. Carlozzi to help us with reading and writing once a week.
